Tips for Having Guests With Pet Allergies

Here at The Ark Animal Hospital, dealing with allergies is one of our specialties. Of course, normally we focus on the allergies that our furry patients have. However, it’s not uncommon for people to be allergic to pets. What do you do if you have guests with allergies? A Dallas, GA vet offers some tips on this below.

Vacuum

Vacuuming thoroughly is one of the best ways to remove dust, dander, and dead fur from your home. Give your house a super-thorough vacuuming a few days before your guests arrive, and every few days afterwards. On off days, quickly go over high-traffic areas and your furry pal’s hangout spots. Or, even better, shampoo your carpets.

Air Quality

Changing your air filter can also make a huge difference. We also recommend getting a good air purifier. This won’t just be useful when you have company. It will also improve your overall air quality.

Grooming

Brushing your furry friend can also help. This will remove dust, dead fur, and dander from your pet’s coat. Plus, the more hair you capture with a brush, the less that ends up stuck to your couch. If you have a dog, take Fido outside to brush him. Bathing your canine buddy will also help. However, you don’t want to over-bathe your pup. This could dry his coat out, which could cause his skin to produce even more oil. This could just make matters worse.

Decorating

Keep your pet in mind when you decorate and/or redecorate your home. If possible, opt for floors rather than carpets, and choose blinds instead of drapes. Another thing that can help is getting washable slipcovers. You may also want to consider getting a leather living room set. (Of course, this may not be a great bet if you have a cat, as Fluffy may scratch it.)

Have Necessities On Hand

Another thing you can do is stock up on OTC allergy meds. Setting out plenty of tissue boxes is also a nice gesture.

Bedding/Guest Room

Choose hypoallergenic bedding for your guest room. Even if it’s already clean, we recommend washing it before your guests arrive. Use hot water and unscented detergent. You’ll also want to wash your pet’s bedding. Last but not least, have guests keep their door closed.
